Law of attraction: manipulation or free will?

Gesetz der Anziehung und freier Wille – energetische Verbindung zwischen zwei Menschen

Am I manipulating other people and disregarding their free will when I work with the Law of Attraction?

Anyone who engages more deeply with the Law of Attraction and begins to consciously change their reality will sooner or later come across this same question. Is it ever right to wish for another person to behave differently than they are showing at the moment?

Perhaps you want to experience a harmonious relationship even though you are currently arguing. Perhaps you wish for your ex-partner to get in touch again, to break up with a certain person, for someone to be kinder to you, or for a difficult relationship to finally be loving.

It is precisely at this point that an uncomfortable feeling often arises. The thought emerges as to whether one is thereby influencing or even manipulating another person's free will.

This concern is understandable. After all, one wants everything to happen voluntarily and does not want to force one’s will on anyone or make decisions for them. At the same time, the Law of Attraction seems to claim exactly that when it is said that other people change according to your inner assumptions.

However, the apparent contradiction dissolves as soon as you understand what a state of consciousness actually is.

The biggest misunderstanding is believing that you are trying to change another person within your current reality.

According to the teachings of Neville Goddard, however, that is exactly what is not happening. You are not standing in front of a single unchangeable world in which you are trying to reprogram other people.

Rather, countless possibilities exist simultaneously, and every state of consciousness corresponds to a different version of your personal reality.

This is exactly where the difference between manipulation and conscious creation lies.

Manipulation means breaking another person’s will within the same reality or influencing them against their own decisions. The Law of Attraction, on the other hand, is not about changing a person, but about changing your own state of consciousness. With this change, the reality that belongs to this new state changes automatically.

So, you are not trying to re-educate someone or override their free will. Instead, you are shifting into a reality where that person already possesses the characteristics that match your new state of consciousness.

This thought seems unusual at first because our mind has learned to view the world as something rigid. We believe there is only one reality and that within this one reality, all people would have to change. This is exactly why the question of manipulation arises in the first place.

According to Neville Goddard, however, there is not just one single possibility or reality. Every conceivable version of a situation is already present. Your consciousness merely decides which one you experience.

Imagine a huge shelf that stretches to the horizon. On this shelf are countless pairs of shoes. Each individual pair represents a certain state of consciousness. If you put on a different pair of shoes, you do not continue along the same path with different shoes. Rather, you enter a different path that belongs exactly to those shoes.

It is the same with your consciousness.

There is a state in which your partner is distant. Another in which your relationship is harmonious. A state in which a person shows no interest in you, and another in which that same person enjoys spending time with you. None of these states are created; they already exist as possibilities. Your consciousness merely decides which one you experience.

Once you have understood this, your entire perspective on free will changes. You do not force anyone to become someone else. You choose the state of consciousness in which the desired reality already exists.

Your consciousness is the key – not someone else’s will

As soon as you begin to view the Law of Attraction from this perspective, your entire focus shifts. You stop trying to change other people because you realize that your actual task is a completely different one.

It is not about convincing, persuading, or steering someone in a certain direction against their will. Your task consists solely of assuming the state of consciousness in which your desired reality is already a matter of course.

This sounds simple at first, but it has far-reaching consequences.

Most people spend all their energy wanting to control the outside world. They constantly observe whether a person is already behaving differently, whether a message is coming, whether someone is acting friendlier, or whether the change they are waiting for is finally happening. By doing this, however, they remain trapped in the old state of consciousness, because their attention is continuously directed toward what they actually want to change.

According to the teachings of Neville Goddard, however, change never occurs by fighting against the existing reality. It occurs by internally assuming a state in which what is desired is already reality. The outer world subsequently follows this inner state like a mirror.

This also means that you are not planting a thought in anyone or rewriting their character. Rather, you are switching to a level of your own consciousness where your experience of this person changes.

Why this concept is so difficult to understand

Our mind has been trained to look for cause and effect exclusively in the outside world. If a person suddenly behaves differently, we automatically assume they have changed their mind or were influenced by external circumstances. That consciousness itself could be the actual cause contradicts everything we have learned from an early age.

This is exactly why many find it difficult to grasp the principle of states of consciousness.

We often imagine reality like a solid building that can only change slowly. Neville Goddard, on the other hand, describes it as something alive that is constantly organizing itself according to your consciousness. It is not external circumstances that determine your inner state, but your inner state that determines which external circumstances you experience.

If you truly allow this thought, the fear that you must or could manipulate other people also disappears. You can only change the state that you yourself occupy. Everything else results from that.

The shoe rack – another perspective on free will

The image of a shelf with countless pairs of shoes helps to make this principle easier to understand.

Imagine each pair of shoes represents a complete state of consciousness. With each pair, you enter a different version of your reality. In one pair of shoes, you experience a person who is closed off toward you. In the next pair, you encounter the same person openly, lovingly, and respectfully. Yet another pair leads you into a reality where you never met.

All these possibilities exist simultaneously.

You do not need to create any of these pairs first. You do not need to persuade anyone to change. You merely decide which shoes you put on and which path you take as a result.

This is exactly what Neville Goddard describes with the changing of the state of consciousness.

You do not change the people.

You change the state in which you encounter them.

This automatically changes the experience you have with them.

Why some changes feel easy and others difficult

Perhaps you have already experienced that some wishes seem to be fulfilled effortlessly, while others take a long time to materialize. Many then believe that the universe decides arbitrarily or is testing them.

From the perspective of consciousness, however, there is a different explanation for this.

The further your desired state is from your previous self-image, the more strongly your subconscious tries to hold onto its previous programming. Not because your wish would be impossible, but because your previous paradigm does not yet accept it as a matter of course.

If, for example, you are deeply convinced that you are not lovable, your subconscious will resist a state of consciousness in which you perceive a fulfilling and loving partnership as completely normal. The resistance does not arise in the outside world, but exclusively within you.

That is why every conscious change always begins with the self-image.

Not because you first have to make yourself worthy, but because your self-image determines which state of consciousness you accept as your natural reality.

Free will remains intact

The concern that the Law of Attraction could override the free will of others is unfounded. If you view consciousness as the foundation of reality, this contradiction dissolves immediately. When you want something and switch to a new state of consciousness, you are not forcing anyone to do anything against their will.

You are not interfering with the consciousness of another person.

You are solely making a decision about which state of consciousness you yourself occupy and which version of your reality you experience as a result.

Free will therefore does not lie in the ability to change other people.

The true free will consists of being able to decide at any time which inner state you assume.

This is exactly the greatest freedom that Neville Goddard describes.

Conclusion

The question of free will only arises if we assume that there is only a single unchangeable reality within which other people would have to be changed against their will. The Law of Attraction, however, describes a completely different approach. It is not about manipulating people or controlling their decisions. It is only about changing your own state of consciousness and thereby experiencing the reality that belongs to this new state.

As soon as you have truly understood this difference, the fear of manipulation disappears. Your attention is no longer directed at wanting to change other people, but at consciously choosing your own self-image, your paradigm, and your state of consciousness.

This is exactly where the true power of the Law of Attraction lies. Not because you gain control over other people, but because you recognize that the greatest change always begins with yourself. As soon as your consciousness changes, the reality you experience also changes. Not through force, not through manipulation, and not against the free will of another person, but because you have chosen to assume a different state of consciousness.
